How Do You Brew Your Tea?
How do you brew your tea? For nearly everyone, this process is different. Those wanting stronger flavors will keep the teabag longer in the pot, but keeping it in for too long may result in a strange taste. Others, similarly, are particular about the types of tea leaves used, and as a result stay away from bagged varieties and only use loose leaf. Even then, the type of loose leaf blend varies, and while any loose leaf blend may do it for some, others pursue higher quality varieties. What factors do you consider when brewing your tea?
The water in the kettle starts to boil, and you hear that familiar whistle rising in intensity. You know you need to pour it out and into a pot, but the taste of your beverage may vary at this basic point. Traditional stove kettles are preferred by some, while others go for models that do not need to be heated by the stove. In any case, the pot inside needs to be cleaned to prevent mineral deposits, which can alter the taste of your beverage.
Where do you put the boiling water? Regardless of whether you pour it into a cup, tea-for-one set, or a large teapot, a bag or ball is likely inside. Teabag blends have unfortunately been given a reputation of lower-quality compared to their loose leaf counterparts, but this assumption is not accurate. Regardless of how the tea is sold, the leaf size determines the flavor. Blends with more leaves (and in some cases more buds) are considered higher quality. Smaller, broken leaves and dust put in a bag create a lower-quality beverage.
A flavor infusion is one option for variation. Often combined with black tea, flavor infusions are added the same time you add the tea leaves. Often dry fruit, spices, or herbs, flavor infusions are used often with black and white teas for variation. While you can purchase, for example, raspberry black tea from the grocery store, you can make your own brew by steeping raspberries or any other dried fruits in with your black tea leaves.
Leaving tea steeping too long makes the water cold. At the same time, tea left too long inside the water may change in flavor. Generally, tea leaves should left in the hot water for no more than five minutes.
