if you had a cup of tea on the moon……..would it cool cown slower???….?
as the moon has no astmosphere, space being as vacuum……..and a flask working on the same (vacuum) principle ..qwould a cup of tea stay HOTTER on he moon ? ANSWER THAT!!!
Lots of answers, but none seem to tie together all the common threads of a sensible answer.
There are 3 methods of transfering heat from a substance that is cooling down:
Conduction, where the heat “moves” to surrounding objects that are touching the cooling substance.
Radiation, where heat energy is radiated away.
Convection, which is physical movement of the cooling substance. EG hotter material at the centre moves outwards where it can be conducted or radiated away. I’ll ignore convection because it will not be relevant (or not significantly) to the rest of the answer.
Different substances radiate and conduct heat at different rates, depending on their chemical and physical properties.
Vacuum flasks work by surrounding a stored liquid with a vacuum. Because conduction requires physical contact this removes conduction as a source of heat loss. However, heat can still be lost by radiation so heat will still be lost, only more slowly.
Taking a vacuum flask to the Moon probably won’t make that much difference to how quickly the tea cools down (assuming for now that the exterior temperature is similar to the previous test on Earth). The environment inside that flask is much the same. Heat will radiate from the inside skin of the flask, across the vacuum, to the outside skin. On Earth this heat can quickly dissipate to the environment via conduction and radiation. On the Moon it can only escape via radiation but it will still cool down. Without any calculations I’m reasonably sure that the heat will be lost at a similar rate.
However, there are a couple of major complicating factors in practice. The Moon has no atmosphere, which means the outside temperature is either very low (when dark) or very high (when light). If the temperature is high the outside of the flask will probably be hotter than the tea inside. The radiation heat transfer will be reversed and the tea will warm up rather than cool down. If the temperature is low this won’t happen. In theory the heat inside should radiate away at the same rate as usual, but in practice there is always some conduction in a vacuum flask (eg via the lid). With a very cold outside temperature heat will conduct away faster so the flask will cool more quickly.
The lack of atmosphere does affect the boiling point of liquids, but this does not change their temperature. Many other answer has suggested that the liquid will boil away. If it is exposed to the lunar vacuum then it will – but this does not make it any hotter or cooler (although once boiled any heat will radiate away very quickly). But assuming the flask is airtight, so its internal pressure is maintained, this won’t happen.
