Remote control of my coffee pot…Are we there yet?
I want to be able to press a button on a remote control from my bedroom to start brewing my coffee in the kitchen. I get up at all different times and so the timer on the coffee maker isn’t cutting it for me…I want to activate the brewing without leaving my warm bed because its freezing out there!!…Does anyone know a product that does this?
An X-10 appliance module + a wired controller will work, as long as the coffee maker is an older type with a hard “on” switch.
Electrically, using the remote is just like plugging the coffee maker in. Unfortunately a lot of modern coffee makers have a “soft” on/off button… pushing the button while the coffeemaker is unplugged does nothing. When you plug them in, they go to a “standby” mode, and you have to push the button after that to actually start making coffee. That type won’t work with X-10 or any other sort of remotely operated power controller.
An electronics geek could modify a modern coffee maker to take an external “start” signal… and this could be provided by another X10 device, a “universal module”. But it would likely be easier to find an older or “dumber” coffee maker with a “hard” power switch.
