Best way to prevent the glass from breaking?
I wanted to drink reeeeaaaally hot tea, so, as I normally do, I boiled the water, put a teabag in my precious 0.5 cm thick glass mug and poured the water onto the teabag.
Next thing I know the mug was nothing but tiny shards of glass!!
Mom blames me and thinks that if I had poured only two or three spoons of boiled water in first, the glass would have slowly adapted to the heat and expanded easily.
But Dad blames my saying that as long as he could remember, his parents have put a teaspoon inside the mug while pouring the water so that it could absorb some of the heat.
Now both claim they’re right, what do YOU think??
Do you have a better theory??

GREAT question!
The spoon idea is not valid. Stainless is a poor conductor of heat. For it to absorb enough heat fast enough is unlikely to do you *any* good at all.
Putting a couple drops in the cup is better, but probably ineffectual too. The few drops may acclimate the bottom, but not the rest, even if you pour slowly, as most people do not.
What you should do is run tap water over the cup…..as the water warms and gets hot as it runs over teh cup, the cup will ‘adjust’…..then it would assuredly be ok to pour the hot water into the cup for tea.
Did your mom and dad sleep in physics class a lot? lol
