Tea Traditions From Around the World
Tea is something that is drank every day around the world. In America it may be as quick as picking it up from a drive-thru or brewing a cup at work and going about your day. But it other countries tea time is sometimes much more extensive and has a far richer history. So the next time you steep a bag of tea consider where your tea came from and how it is consumed around the world.
The earliest mention of tea in history was in Japan in the eighth century. As cultures developed the consumption of tea spread also. For hundreds of years to follow tea was frequently mentioned in poems and stories written by the Japanese. The Japanese believed that tea played a large part in fostering the health and wellbeing of those who drank it, it would turn out later that they were correct.
And while we may just use a teapot or even a microwave to make our tea today it was much more intricate in ancient Japan; the tools they used to make tea included a kettle and brazier, a Temmoku tea bowl on a lacquered stand, and a bamboo whisk. It is obvious that a great amount of tradition and time went into making tea at this time. For a brief period of time tea was seen as a frivolous luxury item in Japan, but as time has passed it has become a part of every day life in the eastern nation.
Another country that is frequently associated with tea is England. Tea became popular in England hundreds of years after it had taken off in Japan in the 17th century. But before the popularity of tea skyrocketed in England it had actually been quite popular in France and associated with the wealthy. There are two times of day when formal tea is conducted in England – in the afternoon, which is called low tea, and in the evening, which is high tea. People who are not accustomed toe English tea sometimes refer to the afternoon tea as high tea because they think it sounds more regal.
Afternoon tea, or low tea, has three different categories: cream tea, light tea, and full tea. Cream tea is served with tea, scones, jam, and cream; light tea is served with tea, scones, and sweets; and full tea is served with tea, savories, scones, sweets, and dessert. These more dense tea times were created to stave off Queen Victoria’s hunger in the 19th century. High tea earned its name because it was most often taken after dinner at a higher table than the low tea tables.
This is just a very brief overview of all of the customs and traditions pertaining to tea time across the world. So consider conducting more extensive research to find out how other cultures drink their tea.
