So I have some Tetley Red tea, get some hot water boiling. Put the water in a cup, dip the tea bag in to the cup. And I get this white stuff that comes on top to the surface of the water.
What is it?
I never got it before. So I just threw it out, tried it again after washing the cup and kettle but got the same result.
PS. I asked this in Food&Drink but that place gets no replies.
Depending on what kind of white/filmy stuff it is it could be one of three things.
Firstly, if you put milk in your tea, the milk could be gone off.
Secondly, it could be the tea itself – maybe try a teabag from a different box (ask a neighbour for a loan of one teabag just to test it before you go buying a big box).
Most likely, though, it’s due to the hardness of the water in your area. We never get this at my house but a lot of my friends and cousins get it. If you didn’t notice it before then it’s possible the hardness of the water in your taps has changed – maybe your supply is now coming from a different place or is being filtered differently. If it is down to the hardness of the water, then it’s perfectly drinkable, and although it makes the tea taste slightly bitter it won’t harm you at all – if you don’t want it, use bottled water instead of tap water (filtering or boiling the tap water doesn’t affect hardness so it won’t help).
