Green tea extract is the herbal derivative from the green tea leaves, capturing the catechins and antioxidants that are sought after for their innumerable health benefits. Studies have shown that regular green tea drinkers have lower chance of developing certain types of cancer along with a reduced risk of heart disease. Green tea may interfere with or affect some medications such as adenosine, some antibiotics, sedatives, beta blockers, blood thinners, anti-psychotics, MAOIs, some cough, cold, and weight loss products. Green tea extract is associated with several health benefits, many supported by preliminary scientific research. These benefits include potential cancer-fighting properties, and a strong antioxidant effect that protects the body from the damaging effect of free radicals.
Green tea extract might also be beneficial in improving cardiovascular circulation by reducing LDL or “bad cholesterol,” suppressing appetite and improving oxidation of fat.
This is one of the least known but most beneficial effects of green tea extract. Green tea prevents inflammation. When there is less inflammation, there is less wear and tear on your joints.
Side Effects of Green Tea Extract
Green tea extract side effects include the inability to sleep. Like coffee, green tea also contains caffeine. However, the caffeine content in green tea is substantially lower than that of coffee and other types of teas. Large consumption of green tea is also associated with headache, heart palpitations, restlessness, nausea, vomiting, constipation or diarrhea.
It can cause damage to the kidney and the liver. In some cases, it can also cause heart palpitations. Some people are also known to suffer from thyroid problems as a result of green tea extract side effect.
