what activities could be provided to challenge traditional gender role in a nursery?
some people think that girls should play with dolls, tea set and dressing-up clothing and that boys should play with footballs, cars and science toys. These idea limit opportunities for boys and girls alike.
Make sure you read books to the children that show men in parenting roles such as bathing the baby, women in firefighter gear, men as teachers, women as mail carriers, etc. If you look carefully at the illustrations when selecting books to read to your class, you will find books that are illustrated with real photographs that work to limit gender-bias. And you can comment as you read “Oh I see this is a lady fire-fighter. Is that ok? Can girls be fire-fighters? Of course they can!” Then make sure that you have fire-fighter clothes in your dramatic play area, and sit down and build with blocks in your block area to help encourage the girls to participate in those areas, and when the boys want to “cook” tell they that some of the greatest cooks in the world are men!
