Does anyone know how much energy is used to produce a reusable coffee cup?
A big deal is made about how people should ditch plastic water bottles or paper cups reusable alternatives. And it definitely makes sense. But people also need to be aware that the bottles Reusable have much more energy and resources to deal with the options available. I'm curious how much energy, compared with paper cups, it takes to make a reusable glass? The idea here is to see how many uses it would take before a thermos / dryer becomes environmentally responsible. Obviously, it would sense to use a glass if you bought a new one every 10 uses, but it might make sense if you use a new one every 10 million applications. So where is that threshold line profitability? Can anyone cite sources on this? There was a study out of the University of Victoria, he says (when you include the energy to wash cups ceramic) that the balance point is closer than 1000 applications. The study was conducted by Professor Hocking.
The equilibrium line is between 200 to 400 uses. Marry a plastic coffee cup containing a few hundred joules worth of oil energy and uses a similar amount in their manufacture, packaging and logistics. A cup of coffee cramic 200g weight requires about a hundred kJ of energy to manufacture from raw materials (Assuming 5000 mugs per ton of crude), including energy costs of distribution and marketing. So I have to use your reusable cup once a day for a year to be profitable against a disposable.
