Which is the BEST single-cup coffee maker??
I have owned 2 Home Cafe coffee makers, and both were a piece of junk. However, I like the coffee (Millstone) pods that work in that system. I never drink enough coffee to make a pot, so have steered away from traditional coffee makers. I know Home Cafe has a new model (afraid to take my chances) and Senseo has a model. The Senseo system looks like it makes an extremely small cup of coffee. What are your experiences and suggestions?
Both Braun (Tassimo) and Krups (HomeCafe) make pretty good pod-based coffee makers. They are more expensive than Black & Decker or Mr Coffee, but the machines are also higher quality and should hold up better. Senseo also makes good quality machines. As for the size of the cups, it can be set to either 4 oz or 8 oz. You’ll basically either get a 4 oz cup of very strong coffee (almost espresso) or an 8 oz cup of lighter coffee (more like an americano). One complaint that I’ve heard about this machine is that the cup clearance is only 3.5″ – so you might want to measure your favorite cup before buying it.
The advantage of pod coffee makers is that they are quick and easy with almost no cleanup. However, you have a limited selection of coffees (just those available in pods) and they tend to be more expensive. The other (cheaper) option is to make drip coffee manually. Pick up a cone filter holder (like this one – http://www.melitta.com/cgi-bin/sgin0101.exe?UID=6620041218171171&T1=64+0008 ). Alternatively, you can get a small french press (they come as small as 12 oz volume). The french press tends to make the best coffee. The benefit of these is you won’t be limited by the selection of pods and you’ll have the option to get fresher coffee. Do be sure to customize your grind for your brewing technique.
