Anybody else tasted Dandelion Root Quaffee?
It’s a coffee substitute. I learned about it in some survivalist books. Here’s how you make it.
Recipe for Dandelion Root Quaffee.
Go out into your yard with a spade and dig up four or five dandelion plants. You can eat the top part if you want to (they’re edible), but keep the roots. Put the roots on a metal pie pan and bake them in the oven at 300 degrees until they have been baked crispy dry. Put the dried dandelion roots in a pestle or similar and grind/mash them into a powder. Put the powder into a tea diffuser or wrap inside of tea-bag paper. Boil some water and fill a coffee cup. Holding the tea diffuser handle (or bag strings) brew the powder in the hot water for five minutes.
The drink will be dark brown and will smell vaguely like unsweetened baker’s chocolate. It will taste like a slightly grainish coffee. So, has anybody else done this?
Oh. I forgot to mention that you should wash the roots before putting them in the oven to bake.
No, but here is a recipe for dandelion jelly.
Dandelion Jelly
4 cups (1 qt.) dandelion flowers
4 cups (1 qt.) water
1 tsp. lemon juice
1 box Sure-Jell
Cook together for 3 minutes the flowers and water.
Strain and save juice.
Follow directions on Sure-Jell box using dandelion water.
Bring to a boil, then add 4 1/2 cups sugar and lemon juice.
