How do I get rid of this odor?

I have a Nissan stainless steel coffee mug which is about 5 years old. I have used the heck out of it, but now the inside has a permanent (?) odor. I have tried hot soapy water, and the dishwasher. The only thing I have NOT tried is bleach – any ideas??? Baking soda perhaps? This mug is indestructible and I don’t want to have to replace it. The inside is completely stainless steel , no plastic of any kind. Thanks in advance!

I know this sounds strange and your not going to believe it…. but use alcohol. Yep, pure 70% rubbing alcohol…

If you use an acid based cleaner (bleach) you will just further aggravate the problem by pitting (little microscopic holes) the inside of your mug trapping MORE odor causing contaminates… It will smell good for a while but then it will start to smell a lot worse, a lot quicker…

My daughter, who is a physician, told me a while back when she was in med school that she read that it was the way they used to do stainless steel bedpans way back before they used plastic… to eliminate odor and to sterilize…

Give it a try… couldn’t hurt…. just make sure to rinse it well after letting it sit…
