What exactly is the “early edition” of a newspaper, of The New York Times specifically? Is it an evening…?
edition covering events of that day or the edition distributed the following morning? Actually, I have never heard of the New York Times releasing any hard copies of their newspaper the same evening. However, I want to be certain.
I would have asked The New York Times but I don’t have enough time now to wait for an email response. I thought that you might know. Thanks.
Newspapers have all sorts of deadlines. The New York Times is in a different situation than most, because it is distributed nationally.
If you look at a Sunday paper in your town, you can just about guess when the deadline is by the sports page. Usually a game has to be over by 5 p.m. or so to make the out-of-town edition. I don’t know if computer images are shipped elsewhere for printing at different plants, or if the Times has a couple of plants in the NYC area and physically ships them out, but it takes a while to get the material out to the nation.
If you could get a copy of the actual Sunday paper on Saturday night, it probably would be pretty close to midnight for those logistical reasons.
Now, some papers like to do an early Sunday paper and sell it on Saturday. If you go to the Chicago airport on a Saturday afternoon, you’ll see the first edition of the Sunday paper.
Just don’t look for the lottery numbers.
