When you make tea, do you also use the stems?
I have a lot of mint, and need to start cutting it down, but I was wondering, when you dry out the mint leaves, and make tea with the leaves, do you also do the same with the stems of the plant?
Does the stem make the tea worse? thanks!
The stems are perfectly fine to use in tea. However, you can choose not to steep the stems if you don’t particularly enjoy the taste. Either way, it won’t kill you. The leaves are the parts of mint plants that are sought after.
When making mint tea, it’s best to use water that isn’t boiling at the moment of herb-to-water contact. Mint leaves are sensitive to very high temperatures. If water with a rolling boil is poured over the leaves, everything you want in your tea will instantly be cooked out of the leaves, and vaporized, leaving you with hot leafy water. Wait until your water has calmed from the boil before steeping.
