what sort of wood is this coffee table made from?

what type of wood is this? i have been told that it is solid mahogany?

The finish appears to be mahogany. No one can determine by just looking at the picture whether the wood is solid or veneered. The price and age would be an indication of whether it’s solid mahogany. But more than likely, it veneered, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Today, the industry standard calls for use of mostly veneer. It allows manufacturers to improve materials, which improves characteristics of the wood. For example, solid mahogany has a tendency to warp if not constructed properly. Also, solid wood has annual movement dictated by humidity in the air. Veneered solids also have less movement.
It’s a nice looking piece BTW.
