Do pre-glued (edge laminated) pine boards contain formaldehyde?
I want to build bookshelves in my basement and I am looking for something non-toxic.
Regular MDF and particleboard are out of the question because they contain formaldehyde. Formaldehyde-free boards are much more expensive, so I was considering going for solid pine planks.
But then I saw pre-glued (edge laminated) pine boards at Home Depot and Lowes (http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=73246-53705-LBR-73246&lpage=none). It seems to make sense because they are cheaper and will have less of a tendency to cup compared to solid planks (I plan to have 12-inch wide shelves and they will be painted white).
Does anybody know if the glue used in laminated pine boards contains any formaldehyde or other toxins? I could not find any information about this online, and I don’t trust the people at the big box stores!

Almost every adhesive/glued product contains formaldehyde. It’s part of the chemical composition. This is what gives new item (houses, cars, shoes, pretty much everything) that “new” smell.
If it does not specifically state that the glues do not release Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) then they contain them.
