Kitchen Decorating Ideas – On The Cheap

Does your kitchen look right at home for the Brady Bunch? It hasn’t had a facelift since Nixon left office? Unless you and your budget are for a total kitchen remodel, you may want to consider a few inexpensive improvements that can bring your kitchen into this millennium.

Paint is cheap. There is no faster way to give your kitchen a brand new look than with paint. Sure, it would be nice to replace your dated oak cabinets with maple or cherry, but the money spent could probably feed your family for an entire year. So consider sanding, priming and painting your existing cabinets with a nice neutral contemporary color, such as sage. You can cover a lot of visual space with a very small amount of money.

Floor it. If your dated kitchen is drowning in a sea of old vinyl flooring, consider putting down new linoleum tile. The peel and stick method is easy for a do-it-yourselfer to install, and there are plenty of contemporary styles and colors to choose from. Once again, you can update a large visual space without spending a fortune.

Let there be light. If your home was originally a tract house, there is a good chance the developer scrimped on lighting. This can be especially frustrating in a kitchen, where the cook requires decent task lighting to work. It is easy to update both the look and the function of your kitchen by installing under-the-cabinet lighting strips. You can purchase the plug-in style lighting units that are easily installed yourself, but the cords aren’t visually appealing. Or you can purchase lighting units that are hard-wired into your electrical system. You may feel more comfortable having an electrician install these for you, but the effect is well worth an hour or two of labor charges.

While on the subject of lighting, don’t forget to replace any dated fluorescent fixtures with updated incandescent fixtures. You won’t believe the difference it can make to the look of your kitchen.

Think small. It is the small details that will make your new kitchen shine. Whether or not you paint your existing cabinets, you can give them a quick update by changing out the dated hardware with new handles and drawer pulls. You might want to update your smaller appliances with new stainless steel coffee make, blender or toaster. After you add fresh new curtains, dish clothes and dishtowels, your kitchen is good to go for another ten years. And you can still afford to buy groceries!
