Are you not able to consume coffee at all while pregnant?
Hi, all! I am actively planning on conceiving by the end of the year. I’m 28, healthy, fit, on prenatals for past 3 mos…but I love my java in the morning! I’ve been a coffee drinker since a kiddo, and I’ve read conflicting yea’s and nay’s on coffee consumption while pregnant. Attention all medical, homeopathic, or just plain experienced mommies….what say you? Do I need to prepare my body for withdrawal from coffee period? All responses are appreciated! Oh, not a soda drinker at all, only a mug of java (canned milk and granulated sugar) in the morning, and lots of water throughout the day. Thanks, all!

I’m ttc also and I’ve been researching this issue day in and day out. Most doctors seem to think that you should drink less than 3 cups of coffee a day – that’s a cup, not a mug hehe – I drink with my mug so I guess that counts as 2 cups, and not more than 300mg of caffeine a day. Depending how strong your coffee/tea are, you can google what the caffeine levels in your coffee/tea. I’m a strong coffee drinker but only 1 in the morning. The rest of the day, I drink herbal tea like mint, decaffeinated green tea, or decaffeinated chai tea. Also, instant coffee has a lot LESS caffeine than dripped coffee, something like 35mg per spoon. I read that you shouldn’t drink decaffeinated coffee when you are pregnant though – something about chemical they use to remove the caffeine. I’m drinking instant coffee right now, 1.5 teaspoons in the morning with milk and brown sugar. But remember that caffeine is not just in your coffee/tea but chocolates, etc. but in smaller amount.
I must tell you though, when you’re actually pregnant, your body might not even wants coffee at all! When I was pregnant, I couldn’t stand the smell of coffee in the morning! I was shocked as I’ve been drinking coffees for 15+ years!
