Is unsweetened green tea bad for you?

So recently I have been drinking an unsweetened green tea called Oi Ocha, and i’ve become rather accustomed to it, so I drink it practically every day. I do not drink coffee, and the tea is somewhat of a substitute; I know too much of anything is not good for you, so I’m a little concerned as to how drinking unsweetened green tea so often may be affecting my health. It has 0 calories, 0 grams of fat, 40mg of sodium, 0 carbs, 0 sugar, 0 protein, and 120% of Vitamin C per bottle. It’s by Ito En, and it tastes like leaves.

My family has a history of diabetes and heart disease, if that is of any relevance. I do monitor my eating habits very closely, so hopefully if the tea is unhealthy, it hasn’t made to big of an impact.

So is there something wrong with drinking unsweetened green tea so often?

This is some stuff that comes in a bottle? It isn’t truly tea: tea has no vitamin C for example. Nor sodium that I know of. I kind of wonder what else they are putting in it…..

Black and green tea are virtually the same. Black tea just means they have backed the leaves. Tea does have some antioxidant qualities, but, it also does have caffeine, so, you need to be aware of that. In moderation, tea is not harmful at all; in fact, it is likely beneficial. In large amounts, like anything, it isn’t.

I wonder about all that vitamin C. You are getting more than you need just in a bottle of this stuff. So, any fruit, or green veggies will add even more. To much of a vitamin is not good either; it can flush out of your system, and take other stuff with it (like iron).

You can make your own tea, probably for a lot less money! A tea bag runs from 1/2 cent to about 10 cents (for the expensive stuff), and you can make several cups from a bag. Loose tea is even cheaper.

The caffeine is definitely a problem if you are prone to high blood pressure, which the heart disease in your family would suggest you are. You may want to get a blood pressure monitor. They aren’t that expensive, and it is a good idea to take regular readings, especially if you have a prehistory like yours. Taking the pressure before, and after your drink may yield some surprising results!
