physics question help please?
The burner on an electric stove has a power output of 2kW. A 790 g stainless steel tea kettle is filled with 20 degrees Celcius water and placed on the already hot burner.
If it takes 2.80min for the water to reach a boil, what volume of water, in cm^3 , was in the kettle? Stainless steel is mostly iron, so you can assume its specific heat is that of iron.
Energy given = Power* time = 2000*2.8*60 = 336000 J.
Energy gained by the aluminum kettle = mct = 0.790*16*(100-20) = 1011.2 J
Energy gained by the water = mct = m *4190*(100-20) = 335200 m J
Equating them
336000= 1011.2 + 335200 m
m = 0.999 = 1kg
Volume of water = (1/1000)m^3 = 1000 cubic centimeter.
