infuser tea cup
How do I choose and use a tea infuser?

I’d love to try some varieties of loose tea. I’ve spent way too long looking at infusers, though. Can anyone suggest a good one (doesn’t let too many tiny bits through) and let me know how you figure out how much tea to put in for a cup? Or is it just trial and error?

I’m not a big fan of infusers as tea expands when wet and it needs room to circulate the water for proper flavor extraction. If you use an infuser, shake it in the sink to knock out the tiny dust that gets in your cup. This will reduce the residue at the bottom.

The standard amount of tea is one teaspoon (that’s why they call it that). Don’t use a tsp measure, use an actual spoon. What fits on it when you scoop it up is what you need. If you steep it in a pot like I do, you put one tsp per cup and “one for the pot”. Then I pour it into the cup through a fine strainer.
