Can you name this poet?

I know this is a long shot, but it’s worth a try. In college I studied a book of collected poems that I loved, but I can’t remember the name of the poet. He was a man. He is now dead. I believe he wrote in English. He was gay, and half of the poems in the book were about his being gay, but none of his gay poems were published in his lifetime. Many of his poems were written in a public coffee shop or restaurant. I remember that at least one of the poems was about watching someone at another table, for example. He is not one of the very famous poets, and he is from an English-speaking country (ie: he is not Russian, French, etc.)
