What text would you suggest for someone interested in Philosophy?
I want to broaden my mind. I took a course in University called Philosophical Issues in Health Care and found it really interesting. I also took a course on the History of Criminology, and we had a few weeks that briefly went over the idea’s/teachings of some ‘thinkers of the time on criminology’
What are some texts or works of Philosophers that you would suggest to a newbie . I know its a pretty broad field of study, but are there ‘the essentials’ reads in Philosophy
The “essential” topics, by the “essential” philosophers, are all found in one place, called the Syntopicon (topics).
Some people will say “Start at the beginning (Plato, Socrates, even the pre-Socratics) and read forward. But the easiest way is by topic. Otherwise you forget in the 2nd book that you are reading what was said in the 1st book, and most of it won’t make sense anyway until you have a lot of concepts under your belt. Those concepts are the “topics” in the Syntopicon.
The Syntopicon is Volumes II and III of a 60 volume set of books in most libraries. You can read what interests you by topic–102 of them. Each chapter is only about 12 pages long, and at the end of each chapter are tons of references so you can find an author on that topic that interests you.

There are also a few beginner’s websites, like the one by Britannica, with its own Dictionary of terms. http://www.philosophypages.com/index.htm
But there are good anthologies out there such as by Will Durant. Just Google them or use the library computer to find the hard copy. The problem I find with such books is what I said before–I can’t remember what was said before because what is being said now is still confusing. Those kinds of books are good after you get some concepts and philosophical history under your belt.
