Question about gastronomy of France and similar western European countries…?

Europeans do not have the horrendous obesity problems that Americans have. One dietary question I have had, though, is about their breakfasts. French people in France normally prefer to only have a cup of coffee and maybe a pastry for breakfast, right? This morning while I was drinking a latte and eating a crossaint, I realized how filling the combination can be, and that if they are using good milk for their lattes, they are getting all the protein they need along with other nutrients. But if they only drink espresso, there is no protein, and wouldn’t they be really shakey, especially if it’s paired with something sweet? I guess their bodies are used to it, but if they have such a light, high-caffein breakfast, how are they so healthy? Is the American dietary suggestion that breakfast needs to be substantial and contain high protein and whole grains mythical? And do most French people prefer espressos or lattes?

Most Europeans and French for that matter don’t just have a Croissant and MILKCOFFE for breakfast, there is more to it. But the common notion that a breakfast should be hearty is from the old Days when heavy labor was required, like on a Farm. Those days are gone, the habit is still there.
