Varieties of Coffee Bean
The Coffee beans are generally known as seeds of the coffee plant which are found inside the coffee berry or coffee cherries. The Coffee beans are then processed in many forms which results in a brewing format. These coffee beans can be easily brewed into a coffee powder.
The vast majority of coffee beans in the world come from the two species of the coffee. They are, Coffea Arabicaand Coffea Robusta. Coffeea Arabica accounts for three-quarters of coffee sold, while the bulk of the remainder is the Coffea Robusta (Coffea Robusta is also known as Coffer Canephora. The Arabica Coffee beans are widely considered to have the best flavor profiles, where the Robusta type is predominantly grown for its hardiness and ability to thrive in harsh conditions but is of lower quality then the Arabica type. There are many different Arabica varietals which produce coffee beans with many distinct flavors and characteristics.
Coffea arabica:
The Arabica Coffee beans from the Jamaican Blue Mountain are widely considered to have the best flavor profiles with all the coffee components complementing each other. The Arabica plant strives mostly in cooler climates where water is plentiful, rich deep soil and temperature that don’t exceed 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Due to these unique growing requirements the Arabica plant is grown on very tropical islands at high altitudes. As a result of the quality taste and supply the price of the Arabica beans are significantly higher than that of the Robusta beans (The best type which is from the Jamaican Blue Mountain goes for on average $38 – $44 per pound). Coffee drinkers generally prefer the Arabica beans and 70% of the world consumption of coffee is that of the Arabica bean.
In Ethiopia (Coffee was discovered in Ethiopia) there are multiple highly-prized varieties of the Arabica type and have many specific growing regions within the country as a whole. The South and Central America are the major producers of coffee beans and a number of Arabica varietals come from these countries and region. Even more varietals of Arabica are found in Africa. The most well-known Arabica beans are Jamaican Blue Mountain, Ethiopian Harar, Ethiopian Sidamo, and Ethiopian Yirgacheffe.
Coffea Robusta:
The second type of the coffee which accounts for 30% of the worlds coffee consumption is the Coffea Robusta type. It can be grown at temperature of up to 87 degrees Fahrenheit and practically any soil type. This type produces beans that are of lower quality than the Arabica type and is known for its bitterness. Coffee drinkers do not to like this coffee because of the bitterness that is associated with it. As a result the cost for this coffee is generally lower than the Arabica type. This provides an option for coffee drinkers that are budget sensitive.
Other species of coffee beans:
The Coffea benghalensis called as the Bengal coffeem,Coffea congensis, Coffea liberica, Coffea stenophylla, Coffea excelsia, Coffea bonnieri, Coffea gallienii Coffea mogeneti and the Hawaiian Kona. Most of these species are rare or non-existent in the export market with the exception of the two Liberian coffees, which are sold in limited amounts in the luxury market. Thus the Coffee beans from the two different places usually have some distinctive characteristics such as flavor, caffeine content, and acidity. These are normally dependent on the local environment where the coffee plants are grown, their method of process, and the genetic subspecies or varietal.
