Is it normal to be this attached to a coffee mug?

I have this coffee mug that I tote around all the time. It’s like the only mug I drink from. I never even leave it outside of my room. But last night I left it out in the kitchen, and this morning I woke up and went into the kitchen where it was no where to be found. I walk around the house and eventually run into my mom’s boyfriend smoking and drinking out of MY cup. I found this to be such an invasion of privacy/personal space that I just confronted him and asked him what he was thinking drinking out of my cup. I’m a very docile person, and I can’t remember ever being so angry since I got into a fight with my best friend years ago. Is this normal to have such emotions for a coffee cup?

No, it is not normal for you to be so emotionally attached to a coffee cup that you will get into a fight over somebody using it! That says emotionally unbalanced. So people will say you have a right to feel protective about the cup, but they are wrong. And it really isn’t about just the attachment.

Over and about the attachment your response and the emotional connection to an object is disproportional. He did not invade your privacy or personal space. He drank out of a cup. The fact that you are guarding your territory so fiercely says something else is going on in your head. No, not crazy. Maybe the feeling of being crowded out so you have to stakeout what is your areas. Maybe the cup was give to you by your dad. My worry is that this will extend into other areas and cause you problems with people, or expand into something else like the irrational hoarding type of thing.

So you need to keep it in perspective. It is a cup. It is not a person. Nobody invaded your privacy. Do not hide the cup away from people in your room so only you can use it either. It gets washed and goes in the cabinet. If somebody wants to use your cup…it is okay. Yelling and fighting with them over a freakin’ cup is unacceptable and wrong.

Like I said it is your response to somebody using the cup that is a concern.
