What can you fill a decorative canister/candle holder with for an international themed room?

My dad and step mom just moved into a house and they are themeing their rooms. They are making one room an international room. My step mom got this decorative candle holder/ vase looking thing, that you can fill the bottom of it with something. We want it to match the them of the room, but were unsure what we can put in it.. We were thinking either coffee beans or wine corks, but we want something a little more exciting… And a little more international. Any ideas?
