Cheapest way to move small amount of stuff across the country?

I’m moving from Upstate NY to Dallas. I’m selling the majority of my stuff, including my car. I will need to move a large storage ottoman (coffee table size), a chair, 4-5 large boxes, my clothes, and possibly a double mattress set (although I might just sell that, too). The smallest U-haul truck would be at least $2,000 once you factor in gas, and renting a trailer isn’t an option since I won’t have a car. Anyone know of any less expensive ways to do it, or am I stuck with the U-haul?
I did get a quote form PODS – they’re more expensive than a U-haul would be, which was surprising to me.
I’m actually leaving my job to go back to school, so money is definitely an issue.

check out PODS -portable on demand storage . they send you the free standing storage unit , you pack it yourself and they ship it to the dallas location. My friend did that when she moved from SA to Seattle last year. I don’t know what sizes they range .
Also, is your company relocating you? is it a work related move ? can they assist in expenses?
other options: put your stuff in storage (or ask family/friends to hold onto it) in NY and then come to texas and save up money or whatever your plans maybe.
Do you have a job lined up ?
You can ride the train ( buy a pass) while in dallas if you live and or work along the Dallas/fort worth travel route. I worked at childrens hospital there briefly . good luck
