Do your co-workers clean up after themselves? What’s been your worst experience with messy/lazy co-workers?
You know, until yesterday I thought my co-workers leaving their coffee covered stirring straws on the counter in the break room was bad enough. That was until my boss sent out an e-mail yesterday morning scolding whoever spilled coffee into the ice machine and didn’t have the common decency to clean it up.
What’s been your worst experience with messy/lazy co-workers?
Oh you touched a nerve! Had some coworkers who had a “food day” in a conference room. My meeting was in the same room for the rest of the afternoon, with about 30 people attending. The tables and chairs were all out of order and they were covered in spilled drinks, chili drips, smears of various foods, etc. I had my secretary check the meeting room schedule for the name of the person who reserved it, then I called them from the conference room and asked them to meet me there. Since I already had people showing up, this was embarrassing. When the guilty party arrived, I advised them that they needed to clean the room quickly and restore it to order as we had a meeting scheduled to begin. At first he balked, but then I said I would be glad to explain that “Joe” left the room too messy for our meeting, so perhaps the EVP of every major line of business in our company would like to reschedule, courtesy of Joe. He cleaned it up, then complained to my EVP about the incident. I called a meeting with HR and had him written up. I explained that I tried to be nice by giving him the chance to clean it up, but if he ever jeapordizes the operation of business because of “food day” again that I will recommend him for termination, partially because of his failure to behave professionally, and partially because of his inability to correct his own mistakes professionally. Honestly, you should have seen this room. It was horrible. I was tempted to make him apologize. He ended up quitting later that year. It looked like a frigging frat party had been in that room. We even had to have the carpets cleaned, and one huge stain of something spilled would not come out. The cleaner said ti had been left there too long. We had just had that whole building remodeled months before. What a jerk. I’m not against people having fun and food days at work, but when the next group has to worry about ruining a $500 suit by sitting in someone’s jelly doughnut drips and sticky juice spills, that is unacceptable.
