Are plastic cups marked ABS on the bottom safe to drink out of?
We have been using a set of bathroom tumblers from IKEA for many years. They are marked with recycling code ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) on the bottom. I am having trouble finding info about ABS. Do you think they are safe to use? (no gut feelings, please!)
I have priced stainless steel cups and they are expensive. I don’t want to use glass in the bathroom. I am wondering if enamel coated metal cups (like the cowboys use!) are safe.
I understand the chemical BPA in #7 is not safe. I also understand the it is safer to stick to items marked 2, 4, and 5. I have switched to stainless steel water bottles and coffee tumblers.

If there were a problem, your water cup would be the least of your worries 
(1) ABS plastic has been around since the fifties, and there is no medical history of issues.
(2) If you have a recent (last 20 years or so) home, or have had any pipe work done, ABS plastic is used in the pipes in your home.
(3) ABS plastic is used in the construction of safety showers and emergency eyewashes in hospitals.
