How do I figure out what size electric motor I need for a particular application?

I need to buy an ac electric motor to use on a coffee roaster on my grill, It needs to turn about a 10 pound drum on a rotissary at around 10 to 50 RPM.

I will proboly have to buy a higher speed motor with a gear reduction box, but I am not sure what size motor I will need.

Any suggestions?

The calculation are a little bit difficult and require a bit more information like required torque. Maybe we can get arround all that.

The simplest motor to use would be a single phase AC induction motor combined with a belt drive. For example the motor on my garage door is 1/2 horspower. That would be plenty for you. These motors typically run at 1750 RPM so you would have to gear it down maybe 50 to 1. It would be nice if you could get a motor with reduction gears on it (like a garage door motor). Even then you would have to use a belt/pully combination. You should be able to get these things at a big hardware store. Be sure to build it in such a way that nobody can get their fingers caught in the pully/belt. Also mak sure you mount the motor on something solid.

The above is just a guess. I’d have to see your specific setup to be sure. You may be able to use a 1/3 HP motor. One thing that worries me is the starting torque. AC induction motors don’t have a lot of power when they start. They make other motors such as split phase that start with more horse power.

Your application sounds more like the requirements for a small table saw motor. Maybe you could find one of those but you still need to bring the RPM way down.
