What is your opinion…?
If I was a cafe owner who served organic and fair trade coffee to my customers, would my business be considered really helping people?
This business would be different compared to a non profit agency who helps disadvantaged people.
I don’t see a cafe serving organic and fair trade coffee really helping people.
Do you?
From one point of view, any business that employs people, and provides merchandise or a service, is helping people. It is providing them with a living, and selling folks something they need or want. A healthy national economy depends on enterprises like that. A business owner is shouldering the responsibility for the success of his company, and deserves to make a living from it too. Forty years ago I saw an article that pointed out that it took a $20,000 investment in a medium-sized business to support one paying job — the building, equipment, inventory, administrative overhead, taxes, insurance, etc. etc. I’m sure the amount is much higher today.
Organic coffee is better for the customers’ health, and fair-trade coffee ensures that the growers get paid a decent amount for their work.
Even non-profit agencies have expenses, and usually have a few people on salary to administer the agency. I don’t see that there’s any extra virtue in charitable donations versus providing good jobs for people.
