Does coffee have a bad affect on people who get low blood sugar?
My boyfriend wants me to stop drinking coffee because I think I read somewhere that it said its not good for people who get low blood sugar to have coffee. I couldn’t find a good website so I thought someone here might know.
Coffee definitely has hypoglycemic effects – that means it will DECREASE your blood sugar levels.
Testing right after a cup of coffee (particularly if you take sugar in your coffee) won’t give you accurate readings. The hypoglycemic effects of the coffee kick in about 20-30 minutes after you drink it and can last for a few hours.
Particularly if you’re hypoglycemic (your body already has poor blood sugar control) you should be aware that coffee will make it worse. You may have noticed that about a half hour after you drink a big cup of coffee you feel jittery or “weird”? That’s your body telling you that your blood sugars are too low.
