how do you deal with adult children 40 who are so cheap at christmas they give their parents a…?

the adult children are not poor, you spend time over the year picking up sick kids at school, driving to sports practices as both parents are at work. take the kids out to movies ect, you get the picture, and then at christmas you get a $10 gift certificate to a coffee shop. that seems like a real slap in the face considering they bought a 42″ tv amongs other things. should i feel bitter.

It’s possible you’re giving too much. When a gift is given grudgingly, it may as well not have been a gift at all.

Your time and effort is also a gift, and if it’s not feeling good to give anymore, you might want to stop giving as much time, or start asking for compensation for the time you give in money or favors. Maybe you should back off a little on the things you do for them if you aren’t feeling it’s worth it in comparison with how they reciprocate. At the same time, it’s not really fair to ask them to give a Christmas gift they wouldn’t give from their hearts.

I don’t know about your family, but I know plenty of 40 year olds who aren’t yet adults. It’s also possible that they got a little in over their heads with the big screen TV and couldn’t afford to give gifts.

The big question is whether this is worth affecting your relationship with the family. If it’s not, just give them the benefit of the doubt and forget about it. I guarantee you’ll regret the stress of feeling hurt over this in hindsight.
