WHAT CAN I EAT TO LOSE WEIGHT ?
Dear Billy,
I had a huge weight problem too- I used to weigh more than two and a half times a healthy weight for a person my height and age. I dieted and was even successful- especially once when I took off all the extra weight and kept it off for more than a year. Then I gained the weight back and it would not come off.
I finally tried a diet that is healthy but it did not work for me- and I did work hard at it because I was trying to prove to my family that I could be healthy.
A few years ago, I found a 12 Step program that emphasized that I had to be honest about things. I had to honestly look at the food and behaviors that made me unhealthy. I did and have continued to do this. It worked out that the failed diet had nothing wrong with it- the problem was with me and once I stopped trying to have even a little bit of those unhealthy foods, everything else worked. My weight got to be healthy and has stayed healthy for years!
Sometimes it is not what we eat, but what is eating us. The 12 Step program helped me deal with that.
I eat the way I am supposed to- even when I don’t want to. (That is hard!!) What is good, is that I have a life.
If you are diabetic, some medical person probably has given you a diet plan- FOLLOW it, except for things you can’t handle or are allergic to,
Check out www.oa.org (it is a world wide fellowship that helps people who eat compulsively, just like AA helps people who use alcohol compulsively. (It’s ok if it sounds weird, keep an open mind.)
ps, It would also help if instead of thinking about all the things you can’t do, you consider what you might be able to do. Being disabled, with arthritis, do you have access to physical therapy? I know people who use therapy in warm water pools to help with the arthritis. See what your doctors say.
There are also things like isometric exercises- see what your doctors say about that.
I drink lots of water, with lemon – not from a mix because they use additives that don’t work for me.
I avoid anything with carbonation. I eat lots of good food, veggies, fresh fruit, good amounts of protein- lean like you do- lots of fish and chicken (microwave fish with a cover plate or paper towel is SO quick and easy), I eat sweet potatoes, peas, corn, potatoes, barley, rice, oatmeal, The meal proportions I use are 1 part protein, 1 part starch, 2 parts veggies, 1 spoon fat. and eat 3 meals and 3 half meals: fruit and yogurt and whole grains. Oh, and I go to sleep at the same time every night. Not being tired means I am not likely to grab something not good for me.
Coffee, Tea, or Me?
