Brazilian Coffee Word Problem?
Mark blends 3/4 of a pound of premium Brazilian coffee with 1 1/2 pounds of standard Columbian cofee. If the Brazilian coffee sells for $10.00 per pound and the Columbian coffee sells for $8.50 per pound, then what should the price per pound be for the blended coffee?
Let’s say he wants to make 3x lbs of blend:
x lbs of B cost $10 x
2x lbs of C cost $17 x
Total = $27x / 3x lbs = $9 / lb
The x’s cancel – it doesn’t matter how much he is making.
Alternate method:
If the ratio of the weights were 1 : 1, the cost of the blend would just be
1 / (1+1) up from the lower one (also known as the average).
8.50 + (1.50 / 2) = 9.25.
But the ratio of the weights is not 1 : 1, it is 1 : 2.
So, the cost of the blend is 1 / (1 + 2) or 1/3 of the difference,
added to the lower one:
8.50 + (1.50 / 3) = 9.00
