You have a 12 oz cup of coffee at 180 degrees F. You add 2 ounces of cold water at 40 degrees F. What is the temperature of the coffee?

metric
12 oz = 0.34kg
2 oz = 0.057 kg
180F = 82
40F = 4.4

specific heat of water is 4186 J/kgC

energy to cool the coffee from 180 to T
E = 4186 x 0.34 x (82-T)
energy to heat the water from 4.4 to T
E = 4186 x 0.057 x (T-4.4)
set them equal to each other and solve
0.34 x (82-T) = 0.057 x (T-4.4)
27.9 – 0.34T = 0.057T – 0.25
0.397T = 28.15
T = 70C or 159F

or you could do it by proportions.

Art, craft, fashion, and commerce, despite widespread presumptions, have hardly been synonymous in the record business. A prime example is Squeeze, one of the U.K. new wave’s most traditional-minded bands and largely the conceit of songwriters Chris Difford (words) and Glenn Tilbrook (music). Despite glowing critical comparisons with Lennon and McCartney, tireless touring, initial successes in Bri…

Scanning the track listing of this album, it’s hard not to conclude that Blur aren’t a little embarrassed by their early work. Opening with the chart one-two of “Beetlebum” and “Song 2″ (from their eponymous 1997 watershed album) rather than the baggy groove of their debut single, “She’s So High,” it’s apparent that they desire to accentuate their more recent efforts. Running order aside, it’s har…
