can i insulate my travel coffee mug with anything?

I bought a ceramic travel mug, but it doesn’t stay warm very long. In fact, my coffee is cold by the time I make it to my car. A friend said a plastic bag and duct tape

Get a proper insulated metal or metal-lined travel mug. Whatever you do to retrofit your mug will be awkward, possibly lead to spills and not be terribly effective.

For the record, I would not like to drive with a ceramic or glass _anything_ loose in the car. Which in the case of an accident could become a projectile and/or shatter into sharp, dangerous shards.
