Why does a coffee stain on table cloth have more concentration in centre and lighter round the edge?

Simply put, however, and I’ve done no scientific study nor possess the vernacular to sound so professional, there is a property of porous fibre to wick liquid from where its most wet to dryer parts.
A large amount of the color in coffee is from particles that are not truly dissolved in the liquid but are just suspended. These solids will move with the liquid as its wicked away…as long as there is enough liquid to carry them…as the liquid available volume is diminished via the wicking…there will be less and less solid…
Eventually you do have move ment of liquid but not of any of the non-dissolved solids…and eventually even the liquid with dissolved solids can no longer be moved by the very technically wicking process…but some liquid that does not contain any solids will still move all be it at a very small rate (but if temperature permits (in other words the slower the evaporation that is occurring the more time liquid will have to move via the wicking process)) and you will see practically color free wetness far from the center of the stain…
