How do I get my kitten to stop attacking my hands?
I just got a kitten 2 days ago for Valentine’s Day and he is barely 6weeks old. He loves when I pet him and hold him but when he starts getting wild he just wants to attack my hands so now I have scratches all over them. I bought him two toys; a teaser that’s furry and has a bell on it and a cat nip mouse with a big feather tail but he is scared of both of them so he still always wants to play with my hands. How do I get him to stop? I hold my hands behind my back but then he climbs up over me to try to find them or he starts biting at my feet. Will he grow out of this or will it just keep getting worse?
Don’t worry, he’ll get the point…eventually. He’s super young, so right now I would just let him do what he wants until he’s like 8 weeks old. Once he’s 8 weeks then you can start the discipline and training. Obviously, right now if he’s hurting you, then put your hands away. You can even just walk away. So, once he’s 8 weeks, when he bites and scratches/attacks your hands and feet say “No” in a very stern voice. He might be scared, or he might not even pay attention. When you say no and he doesn’t listen, you can try and tap him on his nose, very lightly, while saying no again. If that doesn’t work, or you don’t want to do that, when you say no and he doesn’t listen, or he listens but goes back to doing what you just said not to, pick him up and put him somewhere away from you, or just leave. I would sometimes, when my cats were like 9 or 10 weeks old, say no sternly and then put them in the bathroom, with the toilet closed! and leave them in there for about 5 or 10 minutes. They would meow and scratch the door, but you just have to leave them there. Eventually, you can increase the time, don’t do it more than like 20 minutes, and they’ll eventually get the idea. Also, with the stern “No”, he will eventually understand that that is your way of saying I don’t like that. The mother would hiss or growl or something, but you’re not a cat, and he’ll get used to your human ways of telling him you don’t want him to do that. This can also work for scratching the couch, or jumping up on the toilet seat when it’s open or something. But, yeah that should work effectively. It took my cats about two months to learn no, and after that it was only occasionally that they would bite or scratch my hands, but now they don’t and they know they’re not supposed to. Just be consistent and don’t be like “No” and then pick up the kitty and say im sorry and pet it and stuff, that was a mistake i made early on. Good luck!
