Is the food in Costa Rica really as bland and plain as many people say?
I’m planning on spending a year in Costa Rica…but I’m a little worried about food. Food is a big deal for me. I enjoy flavorful foods, savory foods, hearty foods, etc. But from what many people say, it seems like the food of Costa Rica is very bland, plain and (I don’t know if it is, but this is what some people say) not very good. If I live with a host family, how often will I be eating Gallo Pinto? What other types of foods do Ticos eat? Is there a good variety or is it basically the same food at every meal, ex. rice, beans, plantains, and a meat.

ABSOLUTELY NOT. I often go to costa rica. Nosara, specifically and from my experience the food is absolutely amazing. If you live with a host family then YES gallo pinto will likely be served but it is quite tasty because there are different varieties of gallo pinto. Also, the fruit is amazing and they will likely make many fruit drinks and such. If you like spices and such bring hot sauce or buy some local groceries. Typical dishes in costa rica include gallo pinto but thin flat pizza is also common, SO DELICIOUS. A casado is another typical costa rican dish composed of many different items. Costa Rica is famous for their ensalada mixtas so if you like salad you are in for a real treat. They combine everything from hearts of palm to avacado and they are just so delicious. For dessert there are crepes and ice cream and it is usually very good. Also, if you like seafood ceviche is amazing. It is a very common dish and it includes shrimp or camarones or fish with a salsa kind of dip and it is amazing. I am very jealous that you are going there prepare to have the time of your life and get healthy!
