Question for someone who has personal experience with Hawai’ian Islands?
Which island is the best to raise a family on? Some criteria I would like to meet is:plenty of aloha, no/low racial issue, good/great schools, and opportunities to be involved with the community.
Hello,
We have lived here for 6 years now (Honolulu), and have run into our share of racism, we are Caucasian.(blond hair and green eyes) Lately though there hasn’t been any problems. No, we did nothing to be discriminated against, we just were. The problem is that some of the Hawaiians want to go back to the time when they had their royalty, before the US was here, and they see any haole as being attached somehow to the overthrow of their kingdom. However if the US wasn’t here, someone else would be (probably the Japanese). The longer you stay the more localized you become, and the locals can tell they need not bother with you. We however have made great friends in the local community, and wouldn’t change it for the world. Although you have to have some tough skin at times, rising above the problems will be well-worth it in the long run.
Moving on to schools- they really do stink, we have a child on a plan as he has a learning disability, let’s just say the plan doesn’t really matter, however this may just be the educators we have been involved with, on the other hand our other child that has no disability is doing great, but has had a different set of teachers, sometimes the teacher makes all the difference in the world.
If you put yourself into the community, you may not be accepted right away, but keep your chin up you will!
Good Luck!
